An overview about non-Cichlids of West- and Central Africa
An Overview about non-Cichlids of West- and Central Africa: African freshwater fish diversity is not only about cichlids. In fact, most fish species of African rivers are non-cichlids, and only in the African Great Lakes the majority of species are cichlids. Often, cichlid enthusiast assume, that non-cichlids “boaring”, because of missing colors and less interesting behavior. In my talk I will try to overcome this impression by presenting examples for each African fish family, including interesting aspects of their diversity, morphology, coloration, ecology and behavior. Did you know, that some mormyrid hunt cooperatively, almost like chimpanzees? Did you know, that the Nile Delta and the Congo basin harbor a few ancient fishes, whose relatives existed long before any cichlid appeared in Earth history? Did you know, that is quite common that fish species of different groups imitate each other … and why? Maybe, at the end of my talk, you might consider adding some African non-cichlids to your tanks?
