An introduction to fish fauna of Ile Ife and the Jos-Plateau (Nigeria)
Nigeria is not only the most populous state in Africa but also exhibit a vast and interesting cultural diversity. In addition, it harbors a striking ichthyological diversity! I will focus on the fish fauna of Ile Ife and of the Jos-Plateau (geological high plateau in Central-Nigera). Until now only very few studies have been conducted on the ichthyofauna of the Jos-Plateau. An introduction to the habitats and the fishes (some of them still undescribed) found in this region will be given.

11.20 Dr. Ulrich Schliewen ( Germany )
„Biodiversity and Evolution of East African Cichlid Fishes: Approaches, News and Auspices”
.
The age and origin of the enormous East African Cichlid fish diversity is hotly debated: Why are there so many cichlid species? Where do they come from? What has the age and origin of Lake Tanganyika to do with the and origin Congo cichlids? Which role does tectonic earth history play in the generation of cichlid diversity? With this talk I will introduce you into current research questions, as well as into the scientific methodology that is available to tackle some of these questions. Using current research project in Northern Zambia and Southeastern DRC, as well as some examples from recent trips to the region, I will try to illuminate the fascination and beauty of these questions for you.
