Bio Tonnie Woeltjes

Studying biology at the University of Nijmegen I studied the killifish species of the Aphyosemion elegans group from the Congo River basin and the upper Ogowe River basin, and described a new species: Aphyosemion lifiniense from the Lefini River basin in Congo (Brazzaville). More than 40 years I'm an active member of the Dutch Killifish Organisation, KFN, and more than once editor of their journal, Killi Nieuws, now again for the last ten years...

Over the years I have worked for some natural history museums in the Netherlands (Nijmegen and Leiden), the Dutch Museum Association, Natural History Section, in Artis Zoo Amsterdam as curator amphibians, reptiles and fishes, and as teacher and trainer (for amphibians, reptiles, fishes and insects) at a special school for animal maintenance and care. Next to that i have travelled many times to mainly Middle, South and North America to study the biotopes of these animals and as a tourist guide (easy to combine).

The last years I have participated in projects on amphibians, reptiles and fishes for RAVON (Reptiles, Amphibians and Fish research in the Netherlands; an N.G.O.) and Natuurbalans-Limes Divergens in the Netherlands, and for the University of Gent, Belgium in Turkey and Sardinia. We discovered and described f.i. a new lethal chytrid fungus on salamanders (Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans).
